Sharing their love of the boating lifestyle in Sag Harbor, NY, Allied Marine Broker Eric Frank and his wife, Allied Marine Charter Broker Jessica Frank, bring you their Favorite Leisure-Focused Boating Destinations in The Hamptons.
For larger boats that need deeper water, all of these are beautiful anchorages, with water calm enough to swim in and use the towable toys:
- Noyak Bay – This overlooks Long Beach and is a popular place for wakesurfing when the wind is blowing.
- Greenport – You’ll find large marinas and good restaurants in town. You can also catch the North Fork wine trail, and visit a craft brewery.
- Three Mile Harbor, East Hampton – This is great for stopping at a family-friendly restaurant, and they have several, or just cruising into and out of the harbor. It has a beautiful little estuary lined with impressive waterfront homes. Boats can anchor inside and launch the paddle boards and kayaks to explore the shallow waters.
- Fort Pond Bay, Montauk – This area has several things to offer. You can enjoy beautiful views of the sunset, with bluffs and tree-covered hills surrounding one side. Navy Beach sits in the middle, and Duryea’s restaurant is at the other end. Duryea’s is kind of a scene these days with A-Listers visiting from all over. The water view and ambiance are one of a kind. Boats can pull up directly to the dock at Duryea’s. Navy Beach is much more casual, with picnic tables, sofas and sunbeds in the sand, lawn games for the kids and a very pretty, pebbly beach. When arriving by boat, guests can either swim or take the boat’s tender ashore. If foregoing the restaurants, Fort Pond Bay is simply a beautiful place to anchor and watch the sunset, with dinner and drinks onboard.

For smaller boats with a shallow draft, our favorites are:
- West Neck Bay, Shelter Island – This is a freshwater pond inside Shelter Island that is warm when the water in the bay is still cold. It’s a great place to pull out the watertoys, especially for the little kids. It’s only about a quarter-mile wide, and surrounded by beautiful waterfront homes.
- Cedar Island Cove, Shelter Island – This is a beautiful place to drop the anchor and enjoy the view. It’s located between the Ram’s Head Inn and the Mashomack Nature Preserve. A paddleboard or kayak is fantastic here because you can explore in the shallow water. Wild swans, wading birds, deer, fawns, ospreys, and crabs are easy to spot when you’re near the nature preserve.
